their answers. Painting is a family affair in our house. I might paint quite a few paintings but I do fill my rubbish bin very quickly!”

The joy of giving…

In his day job, Sandhu is a Cardiac Nurse at Royal Jubilee Hospital, and donates his paintings to also does art demos at schools to inspire kids, and gives workshops on watercolour painting. When not creating in the studio, he loves spending time at home with his wife (also a nurse), and sons Liam (13) and Nyjal (7), and daughter Mohannah (12). “My kids don’t let me sell certain paintings. Once Mohannah took a painting from my wall and gave it to her teacher because she liked her! My kids share my studio and there is no restriction of using my brushes or paints. Six years ago, a gallery owner told me that my work was not good and I should not show it anywhere in front of Liam. I was devastated but I didn’t stop. Instead, I used it as an example for Liam to pursue my passion. To this day, we both talk about that incident.”

Sandhu has great advice for beginner artists: “Draw a lot. Give it a try, nothing to lose! I paint when I want to. I do not worry about colour schemes. I try to capture mood instead of a scene. Tell a tale, not just paint. My colours are bold. I don’t mind using white if that improves my painting.” He also gets all sorts of advice regarding what he should paint, based on what is selling. But he paints what inspires him, not just to make a sale. The same applies to commissions. “My life experiences and feelings inspire me. When I paint, I forget my past and I am fully present. I try to enjoy the process of painting instead of trying to create the master class. When I am having fun, painting is happy!
