The ar­chi­tect of the Na­tional Li­brary of Latvia – known as “the Cas­tle of Light” – has died at the age of 92. Gunārs Birk­erts fled his na­tive Latvia to­ward the end of the Sec­ond World War and stud­ied at the Tech­ni­cal Univer­sity of Stuttgart be­fore mov­ing to the U.S. He worked with Eero Saari­nen and Perkins + Will be­fore found­ing his own firm. His build­ings can be found around the world, in­clud­ing in Corn­ing, New York, for which he de­signed a pyra­mid-shaped fire station and the Corn­ing Mu­seum of Glass.
