Asiana Chicago-Seoul OZ First Suite, New Trent iTorch External Battery, United Newark-Hong Kong Business Class, Public Chicago

As mobile devices become more pervasive, our power consumption increases. It’s also no secret we strive for a balance of style, functionality and long lifespan from our devices, especially those we rely on when we travel.

The iTorch IMD52D is sleek at 4 by 1.8 by 0.9 inches and lightweight at only 4.4 ounces. It fits easily in a pocket or computer bag. The matte black finish with chrome trim is sleek and pleasing to the eye. The four battery power lights make it easy to understand how much power is available for charging – one solid light indicates 25 percent, two equals 50 percent etc. It comes with two cables – one for the Samsung Tab, and one microUSB connector – and a small velvet pouch.

On first use, I checked the New Trent website and found the device requires only six full hours to charge so I plugged it in overnight. Starting with full battery power on the iTorch, I was able to use my Apple iPhone 5, iPad 3 and my Verizon JetPack Mobile Hotspot, and temporarily kept myself free from dependence on wall sockets.
