The idea of mo­bile hand-held univer­sal com­mu­ni­ca­tions de­vices read­ily avail­able to an ea­ger pub­lic may seem like a re­cent de­vel­op­ment. But the con­cept has been around al­most since the early days of ra­dio. And the cell phone it­self turns 40 this year. The de­vice’s cre­ator, Martin Cooper, who worked at Mo­torola, to his ri­val, Joel En­gel, head of re­search at Bell Labs. One may only imag­ine how that ex­change went.
