THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART 11 W. 53rd St
Sufficiently jazzed up on bakery sweets, we can fully appreciate the over-thetop energy that is Times Square. Packed with neon lights, giant billboards and electronic ticker tape, this truly feels like the Crossroads of the World. Here, we’ll find the recently reopened TKTS Discount Booth to pick up some half-off tickets for a Broadway show tonight. With any luck, it’ll be a Tony winner.
Next we’ll head uptown to pay a visit to the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd just off 5th Avenue. MoMA is a significant showcase for modern masters and has a number of mustsee works – van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World and Henri Matisse’s Dance, to name a few. But MoMA also manages seven curatorial departments – Architecture and Design, Drawings, Painting and Sculpture, Photography, Prints and Illustrated Books, Film, and Media and Performance Art. Each contributes its own essence to the collections in this bright and ample space, centered around an airy fivestory atrium and overlooking a sculpture garden. Summer hours Sun through Fri 10:30 AM – 8 PM, Sat 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Tickets cost $25, but every Friday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 PM admission is free.
