De­mo­li­tion has be­gun at Gatwick Air­port on the 50-year-old-plus South Ter­mi­nal Pier 1. The new two-story ter­mi­nal build­ing that will rise in its place is part of a $281.2 mil­lion re­de­vel­op­ment pro­ject and is set to open in sum­mer 2015.

Pas­sen­gers will be able to use au­to­mated fast-bag drops, or check bags at any of the nine check-in zones with the bags sent to any area of the bag­gage sys­tem. Air­lines will also have the op­tion to of­fer “day be­fore” check-in, us­ing a new au­to­mated bag stor­age sys­tem.

The lat­est pro­ject in Gatwick’s re­de­vel­op­ment fol­lows a se­ries of up­grades, in­clud­ing the ex­ten­sion of the air­port’s North Ter­mi­nal and a re­vamped se­cu­rity area at the South Ter­mi­nal.
