Thrissur Pooram Elephant Festival Thrissur, Kerala, India May 8 – 10
One of India’s most popular temple festivals, this more than 200-year-old event was created by Raja Rama Varma in 1798. With a combination of religious pomp and color, it honors Shiva, the presiding deity. Folk dancing, panchavadyam (rhythmic beat elephants are the main attraction, with golden headdress, decorative bells and ornaments, and riders that carry ornate parasols.
