Marriott International Buys Starwood
Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts have announced the two companies are merging. The combination will form the largest hotel company in the world, operating or franchising more than 5,500 hotels with 1.1 million rooms globally.
The $12.2 billion deal will see Starwood’s portfolio of brands join Marriott’s own brand portfolio. While it is likely that all the hotel brands will be retained, at some point in the future Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program, which has 21 million members, will likely merge into Marriott Rewards, with its 54 million members.
The announcement culminates weeks of speculation that Starwood has been seeking a buyer.
