San Diego Senses Taxi Demand
To address customer concerns about taxi wait times, San Diego International Airport began to explore ways to gather real-time data to help improve taxi and shuttle van customer waiting times. The airport needed a system that would automatically and accurately collect both real-time and historical wait time data, and chose the BlipTrack solution, from Denmarkbased BLIP Systems.
The BlipTrack solution passively measures and predicts movements of people and vehicles. Unlike iBeacons, which require travelers to download an app, the BlipTrack sensors automatically detect active mobile devices with enabled Bluetooth or WiFi, yielding a sizeable penetration rate of 40 percent.
In the case of San Diego International Airport, the solution is able to monitor taxi queues and provide both historical and realtime information. With this data, the airport has been able to manage and improve tactical management, plan more effectively prior to the day, and allocate resources more effectively on-the-day.
