United Unveils Basic Economy
United has announced its much-anticipated Basic Economy fare, a lower cost, no-frills economy class offering which will limit customer options by removing or restricting certain features that are standard in United’s Economy class.
Among the changes Basic Economy will impose:
• Seating cannot be assigned in advance, and once assigned, cannot be changed.
• With some exceptions, carry-on luggage will be gate checked for a fee.
• Mileage Plus members will earn award miles but other benefits are limited.
• Basic Economy will not be eligible for Economy Plus or premium cabin upgrades.
• Basic Economy will board in the last boarding group.
Other rules and restrictions apply. However Basic Economy fare passengers will have the same Economy cabin dining, WiFi and inflight entertainment options, according to the airline. The new fare class will be available for spring travel.
