Townhomes shine in Copperfield
Mountain retreat lifestyle inspires collection of 65 units in city’s southeast
Astylish twist on townhome living, Chalet No. 4 is Sabal Homes’ latest multi-family venture in Calgary’s established southeast area of Copperfield.
This collection of 65 townhomes is inspired by the mountain retreat lifestyle.
“We are featuring both heritage and urban elevations and we have tweaked the floor plans to suit the site elevations,” says Brenda Kelly, sales and marketing manager for Sabal Homes’ multi-family division.
This is Sabal Homes’ third Chalet development in Copperfield and the designs have evolved over time. The latest edition features European styles, with generous use of wood and glass on the exterior and new floor plans — seven in total.

With a history of innovation and modern architectural design, Sabal Homes began by building inner-city infills and condos more than eight years ago. It has since become known for its line of starter and moveup single-family homes, as well as for its multi-family designs — all in master-planned communities in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane and Edmonton. Designed by Hopewell Residential Communities, Copperfield is an established community in Calgary’s southeast just off Marquis of Lorne Trail.
The area features a community centre with tennis courts, a skating rink and toboggan hills.
Bike paths, three ponds, parks, playgrounds and tot lots dot the area, which is connected by a ribbon pathway system. Copperfield is a five-minute
The designs offer full driveways, nine-foot ceilings, rear decks and walk-in closets.
The two-storey townhomes range from 1,390 square feet to more than 1,500 square feet. Designs include two- and three-bedroom models, both of which can accommodate an upstairs study. For people wanting to stay toasty warm in the winter, two designs feature an attached garage.
“We have found that there are two types of people — those who want a garage and those who want a fully developed basement,” says Kelly.
Although the base price of the homes does not include basement development, it is available as an option.
“The total home cost with basement development will be similar to the cost of a home with an attached garage,” says Kelly.
These homes are appealing to two types of buyers — the under-35 crowd, both couples and single women and the over 50 market, says Kelly. “They all want a lock and go lifestyle at a great price point,” says Kelly, adding that Sabal is excited about multi-family homes.
“There are at least five more multi-family phases coming on line in Copperfield and we are going in to Mahogany and Martindale in the northeast this year,” she says.
The demand for multi-family dwellings is on the rise, says Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
Constructions starts of multifamily homes in Calgary hit 505 in December, up from 153 during the same month in 2010
The numbers are expected to increase in 2012.
Kelly says that multi-family housing is becoming more and more popular in the suburbs because of prices and amenities.
“You get a lot more square footage for the same price and it’s a great lifestyle — you don’t have to spend your weekends mowing the lawn or shovelling the snow,” she says. “The community of Copperfield is a really large draw because it is an established community.”
Copperfield is home to three ponds, plus spacious parks and play areas that are connected by a series of pathways.
Close at hand are two shopping plazas, and a Starbucks coffee shop is a short stroll from the Chalets.
“It’s a really dog-friendly community and that is appealing to a lot of people,” says Kelly.
Finishes are mountain inspired and home buyers have a choice of four palettes — two with an urban focus and two with a heritage feel.
The urban look is all about clean lines — think flat panelled cabinets in architectural white.
The heritage esthetic is more traditional. Imagine wheatcoloured Shaker cabinets with a rustic feel.
Stainless-steel appliances, porcelain tile, brushed chrome lighting, flat profile casings and baseboards, elegantly detailed bathrooms, and laminate hardwood flooring are some of the standard features.
“We really priced these homes so that people could get into the market at a great price point without having to upgrade and still have a fantastic home,” says Kelly.
The homes launch today — and for a limited time, buyers will receive $5,000 in upgrades, giving purchasers the ability to personalize.
Homes start in the $270,000s. drive from South Trail Crossing and the shops, services and restaurants located on 130th Ave.
A shopping area that includes a Starbucks can be found within the community. The community offers an extensive show home parade that includes condos, townhomes, laned homes and front-drive garage homes.
