Terres Dorees Moulin a Vent by Jean-Paul Brun 2012 — $29
Gamay remains one of the most underrated red grapes on the planet, partly because its good name has been besmirched by that wretched creation known as Beaujolais Nouveau. Good Gamay — and the vast majority of Gamay comes from France’s Beaujolais region — offers a flavour profile not unlike what you will encounter in the neighbouring Burgundy region, and at a fraction of those atmospheric prices. The granite-based soils of Beaujolais contribute a nice core of minerals to this wine alongside the classic red-berry fruits and a hint of spice. Chill it down and serve it with flank steak or spice-rubbed tri-tip.
