Final round 68 clinches title

South Dakota State golfer takes Calgary Ladies Amateur by a stroke

-

South Dakota State golf team member Sydney MacDonald, 21, captured the Calgary Ladies Amateur golf championship in style on Thursday with a final round of 4- under 68 at Cottonwood G& CC.

The low round of the entire tournament afforded the Fox Hollow GC player a one- shot win over the Glencoe’s Andrea Kosa and Ella Williams.

MacDonald recently wrapped up a stellar collegiate season that saw her post the second- best singleseason stroke average ( 76.84) in school history along with other SDSU marks — most top fives ( four) and top 25 finishes ( nine) in a season and low round ( 68). She was also named the Academic All-Summit League women’s golf team after finishing third in The Summit League Championship.

On Thursday, she was five shots better than Kosa and three better than Williams to eke out a win, finishing 2- under for the tournament ( 74- 72- 68). Kosa ( 72- 70- 73) and Williams ( 72- 72- 71) also placed under par.

Sabrine Garrison of Country Hills ( 72- 73- 76) finished alone in fourth, while Willow Park’s Kim Carrington ( 79- 75- 70), 2014 champion Meaghan Leblance of Bearspaw ( 72- 75- 77), Glencoe’s Jana Johnson ( 73- 78- 75) and Glencoe’s Erin Farner ( 73- 78- 75) rounded out the top eight.

In other local golf news, the Rileys Best Ball finals are set for Sunday at Canyon Meadows G& CC.

And the men’s main event is a doozy.

The 2014 champions Kevin Temple and Jamie Welder ( Country Hills) will go up against 2013 champions Micheal Engelhardt and Shane McKee ( Rivers Edge). Also on the docket at 11 a. m. on Sunday is the main event consolation featuring Geoff McMillan and Derrick Newman ( Glencoe) against Todd Chapman and Steve Copeland ( Canyon Meadows); the senior event final featuring Pat McGowan and Al Dowdell ( Heritage Pointe) against Frank Sutton and Howard Broun ( Earl Grey); and the senior consolation featuring Darren Anderson and Doug Hutchings ( Bearspaw) against Gerry Stoddart and Roger Sontag ( Priddis Greens).
