Cal­gary po­lice of­fi­cer charged with as­sault of man un­der ar­rest

City po­lice have charged one of their of­fi­cers with as­sault­ing a man who had been ar­rested.

On March 24, 2016, po­lice say a man who had been de­tained and charged fol­low­ing a com­plaint in the city ’s down­town area had been taken to the CPS ar­rest pro­cess­ing sec­tion.

It was there that the man was al­legedly as­saulted by a po­lice of­fi­cer.

The charge comes af­ter a re­view by the Ed­mon­ton Crown Pros­e­cu­tor’s of­fice.

Twenty-one-year vet­eran Const. David Piz­zo­lato has been charged with one count of as­sault and placed on a 30-day ad­min­is­tra­tive leave while his sit­u­a­tion is re­viewed.

The CPS said that Piz­zo­lato will re­ceive “all avail­able sup­ports” from the force dur­ing the court process.
