Habitat for Humanity added to the stock of affordable housing in Calgary with the recent opening of a fourplex in the northwest community of Bowness.

Habitat for Humanity, along with sponsors, donors, community partners and volunteers, as well as future homeowners of the project, gathered at a dedication ceremony on Oct. 19.

“Today is a celebration of what a community of caring people can do to help others find a path to this enormously powerful place we call home,” said Laura Dickson, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta’s director of families and volunteers. “Homeownership is the stability upon which families build hope and optimism about the future, and a home is a physical space to personalize, to build and nurture pride about.”

In addition to many of the project’s sponsors, donors and volunteers, the Government of Alberta has been a significant supporter of these homes in Bowness, with Minister of Finance Joe Ceci in attendance at the dedication.

“Affordable homeownership builds long-term stability and independence, empowering families to invest in their futures, and creating lasting benefits for their children,” said Ceci. “Each family has worked to build their home and will be able to purchase it with an affordable mortgage requiring no downpayment, interest-free, and with monthly payments set to their income level.”

The completion of the Bowness fourplex was supported by financial contributions from numerous sponsors, donors and community partners, including the Government of Alberta, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, the CREB® Charitable Foundation, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation, the Prosser Charitable Foundation and the Interfaith Build Project.

In addition to financial support, many tradespeople, contractors and suppliers stepped forward to offer donations of building materials and expert labour, along with more than 10,000 volunteer hours.
