This sec­ond edi­tion es­tab­lishes Davin de Ker­gom­meaux, for­mer con­tribut­ing ed­i­tor to Whisky Magazine and con­trib­u­tor to Whisky Ad­vo­cate, as per­haps the pre-em­i­nent ex­pert on his sub­ject. Wrapped around pre­cise tast­ing notes on 100-plus whiskies— fully up­dated since the 2012 first edi­tion—de Ker­gom­meaux presents a deeply re­searched and beau­ti­fully writ­ten nar­ra­tive on the im­por­tance of Canada’s con­tri­bu­tions to the dis­tilled arts. Cor­rect­ing mis­in­for­ma­tion (a.k.a., lore and leg­end) is his prime goal. “No mere boot­leg­gers, we Cana­di­ans!” he keenly as­serts, and we should em­brace with pride our role in defin­ing what it is to be a whisky called rye. These are ex­cit­ing times for dis­till­ing in Canada, he says, nod­ding to vet­er­ans and craft up­starts alike— and that’s worth rec­og­niz­ing with a raised glass.
