De­fend­ing res­i­den­tial schools

I have just fin­ished read­ing “Fac­ing the Past: Res­i­den­tial schools nam­ing project seeks to iden­tify for­mer stu­dents de­picted in pho­to­graphs” [Cur­rents, Au­gust-Septem­ber 2016].

It is in­cor­rect to say that the pho­to­graphs the staff took be­longed to the chil­dren. I pur­chased my own cam­era and film, paid to have pho­tos pro­cessed, and am the owner and the copy­right artist.

The chil­dren who went to res­i­den­tial schools are not sur­vivors. They are for­mer stu­dents, and they were lovely chil­dren. In the four and a half years I worked in the schools, I wit­nessed one fight. My book,
