The Lone Ranger’s loyal side­kick, Tonto, was played by a Cana­dian. Jay Silverheels was born Harold J. Smith in 1912 on the Six Na­tions of the Grand River Re­serve, in On­tario, and be­gan act­ing in 1938. Hand­some and ath­letic, Silverheels spent his early ca­reer play­ing var­i­ous “In­dian” char­ac­ters be­fore be­ing cast in 1949 to co-star in The Lone Ranger. He died in 1980.
