This squat and sturdy cousin to the long ship was used pri­mar­ily for trans­port­ing cargo. The knarr was used ex­ten­sively dur­ing the Vik­ing age to ship every­thing from sup­plies and live­stock to set­tlers. The Vik­ings who vis­ited the New World trav­elled there via knarrs. They pri­mar­ily re­lied on a sail for propul­sion, us­ing oars pri­mar­ily for launch­ing and land­ing.
