While Vik­ings are in­deed guilty of most of the ter­ri­ble deeds at­trib­uted to them — from rob­bing monas­ter­ies and raid­ing set­tle­ments to tor­ture and mur­der — they were also pro­fi­cient traders, ex­chang­ing goods such as tex­tiles, pot­tery, sil­ver, and slaves with peo­ples as far away as the Mediter­ranean and Rus­sia.
