ONLINE POETRY COURSE, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

Based out of the University of Pennsylvania, but with many Canadian participants, Modpo offers a decentred, free-admission structure for learning about an art form—in this case, modern and contemporary poetry. Modpo is a MOOC—A massive open online course—but it avoids the impersonal, perfunctory quality of other MOOCS by emphasizing “close collaborative readings” of works by poets ranging from Emily Dickinson to Christian Bök and beyond. Some readings are generated during live webcasts. Others are created by users and uploaded to the course site. Yet others take shape in discussion forums for each poem.

In many ways, Modpo is the Internet at its nerdy utopian best, enabling far-flung individuals with a shared interest to meet, discuss and learn.
