For Nova Scotians, 1,000 cyclists passing through on one day in September might be a surprise – something the Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-marie takes into account. “About a week prior to the event, the organizers send a letter to every Clare resident explaining what a gran fondo is, how traffic will be affected and how to best share the road with cyclists,” marketing co-ordinator Larry Peach said. Heading into its third edition, the fondo has grown steadily and is marked by its hospitable vibe. “We encourage residents to show off our famous Acadian hospitality by cheering on the cyclists from the sides of the roads, to wave Acadian flags and ring cowbells,” Peach said. The routes, ranging from 35 to 161.5 km, will keep you fuelled, but save room and some energy to enjoy the local fare (lobster, anyone?) and music at the finish.
