For most of us, scenic roads with little traffic are something we’d keep to ourselves. The organizers at Lost Shores Gran Fondo, however, with help from the Guysborough Municipality, set out to gain exposure for their local roads and community. “The idea of a gran fondo here didn’t even exist until March of last year, but then it went really, really well,” said event director Robert Carter. Organizers had more than 300 riders at the inaugural event. “Most riders were from Nova Scotia, but had never seen this part of the province,” Carter said. The routes (30, 50, 90 or 130 km on the road, or 30 km on a rail trail) are quiet and filled with oceanfront scenery, with the option of rolling hills to provide a challenge with the view. Registering early won’t save you money – the cost is $99 regardless of distance or registration date – but it will ensure you get a commemorative jersey. Other event perks include local craft beers, barbecue ribs and local live music.
