Unlike many events marketed explicitly as rides, not races, Ghost of the Gravel is a race, complete with prize purses and Alberta Bicycle Association points. Unlicensed participants can ride the 118-km loop through the Alberta foothills in the fondo category. If 2,100 m of undulating gravel and pavement isn’t for you, opt for the 70-km out-and-back friendly ghost ride. You’ll still have to climb to the course’s highest viewpoint before turning back, though. The ride is in its third edition, but the idea grew throughout the past 10 years. “Ghost of the Gravel started 10 years ago as a tradition among a group of friends, who would do the loop in one day from Calgary,” said Shawn Bunnin, race organizer. “After many years, the roads and terrain were too good not to share with other riders who wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to experience the spectacular lesser-known roads of Alberta, so Ghost of the Gravel was born.”
