THE BATHHOUSES

-

In Finland, the sauna aesthetic ranges from rustic rough-hewn cabins (ABOVE) to temples of Scandi-chic minimalism. In Turkey’s finer hammams, expect vaulted ceilings, ornate tilework and a heated marble göbek taşı, or “navel stone” (don’t worry — you lie on it, not vice versa). In Japan, meanwhile, simplicity and spirituality reign, and any onsen worth its salt will afford views that put bathers in harmony with nature.
