GRIZZLY BEAR (URSUS ARCTOS)
Bear Necessities: With winter’s harsh weather coming, early fall is an important feeding time for Canada’s grizzlies. Photo by contest entrant Richard Ecker
With harsh weather coming, early fall is an important feeding time for Canada’s grizzlies. After thriving all summer on berries, roots and grasses, along with insects, carrion and the occasional small mammal, coastal grizzly bears stake out salmon runs for a welcome and essential change. See Hinterland Who’s Who (hww.ca) for more. This image was captured by photographer Richard Ecker, near Terrace, British Columbia. Like many images in the magazine, it was originally submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Federation photo contest. Visit cwf-fcf.ca to enter monthly and annually.
