Group grading homelessness
SYDNEY — A new group in the community is investigating the depth of the age old problem of homelessness.
The Community Action on Homelessness Cape Breton Regional Municipality was established recently to respond to the local homelessness issue.
“The goal is actually to produce a community report card,” said organization member Christa Dicks. “What I would like to do in that is illustrate what the situation is in Cape Breton.”
To compile that report Dicks plans to set up focus groups to identify services that are needed and find out some of the reasons why people become homeless.
“There are a lot of youths and a lot of young adults and a lot of older people doing what they call couch surfing and they are called the hidden homeless.”
She said the hidden homeless, for a variety of reasons, are continuously moving through temporary housing arrangements provided by strangers, family or friends.
