De­fend­ing cham­pion Jones, McCarville per­fect at Scot­ties

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (CP) — On­tario’s Krista McCarville and Canada’s Jen­nifer Jones lead the Scot­ties Tour­na­ment of Hearts af­ter five draws with 3-0 records.

McCarville joined Jones atop the stand­ings with a 12-6 win over Eve Belisle’s Que­bec rink in Sun­day’s Draw 5. On­tario took con­trol with five in the fourth end.

In other Draw 5 re­sults, Prince Ed­ward Is­land im­proved to 3-1 by beat­ing the North­west Ter­ri­to­ries/Yukon 10-7.

Saskatchewan topped New­found­land and Labrador 8-5 and New Brunswick de­feated Nova Sco­tia 10-6.

Jones, the de­fend­ing cham­pion from Win­nipeg, was idle in the late draw but scored a pair of wins ear­lier Sun­day. She de­feated Am­ber Hol­land of Saskatchewan 7-3 af­ter scor­ing four in the sixth end to de­feat An­drea Kelly of New Brunswick 5-4.

In other Draw 4 play, Jill Thurston’s Man­i­toba rink de­feated Shel­ley Ni­cholls of New­found­land and Labrador 9-6.

Kelly Scott of Bri­tish Columbia capped off the af­ter­noon draw with a tight 5-4 victory over Que­bec.

In the other morn­ing action on Sun­day, Sweet­ing de­feated Kathy O’Rourke of P.E.I. 13-2, hand­ing them their first loss of the tour­na­ment. Thurston de­feated Nancy McCon­nery’s Nova Sco­tia rink 7-3. The fi­nal match of the morn­ing saw Scott hold off a late charge to de­feat the Ter­ri­to­ries 76.
