Defending champion Jones, McCarville perfect at Scotties
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (CP) — Ontario’s Krista McCarville and Canada’s Jennifer Jones lead the Scotties Tournament of Hearts after five draws with 3-0 records.
McCarville joined Jones atop the standings with a 12-6 win over Eve Belisle’s Quebec rink in Sunday’s Draw 5. Ontario took control with five in the fourth end.
In other Draw 5 results, Prince Edward Island improved to 3-1 by beating the Northwest Territories/Yukon 10-7.
Saskatchewan topped Newfoundland and Labrador 8-5 and New Brunswick defeated Nova Scotia 10-6.
Jones, the defending champion from Winnipeg, was idle in the late draw but scored a pair of wins earlier Sunday. She defeated Amber Holland of Saskatchewan 7-3 after scoring four in the sixth end to defeat Andrea Kelly of New Brunswick 5-4.
In other Draw 4 play, Jill Thurston’s Manitoba rink defeated Shelley Nicholls of Newfoundland and Labrador 9-6.
Kelly Scott of British Columbia capped off the afternoon draw with a tight 5-4 victory over Quebec.
In the other morning action on Sunday, Sweeting defeated Kathy O’Rourke of P.E.I. 13-2, handing them their first loss of the tournament. Thurston defeated Nancy McConnery’s Nova Scotia rink 7-3. The final match of the morning saw Scott hold off a late charge to defeat the Territories 76.
