Bruckschwaiger said deterioration of the beach has been ongoing for more than 15 years. The beach has been closed since July 2004 when elevated levels of fecal bacteria were found in the water, but a $20-million sewer treatment project is nearly completed and the beach is scheduled to reopen this summer.
At an earlier date Corbett stated he had contacted Natural Resources Minister John McDonell regarding the damage and the minister indicated he wanted to see the beach for himself.
