Bruckschwaiger said de­te­ri­o­ra­tion of the beach has been on­go­ing for more than 15 years. The beach has been closed since July 2004 when el­e­vated lev­els of fe­cal bac­te­ria were found in the wa­ter, but a $20-mil­lion sewer treat­ment project is nearly com­pleted and the beach is sched­uled to re­open this sum­mer.

At an ear­lier date Cor­bett stated he had con­tacted Nat­u­ral Re­sources Min­is­ter John McDonell re­gard­ing the dam­age and the min­is­ter in­di­cated he wanted to see the beach for him­self.
