Help available to offset home heating costs
NORTH SYDNEY — As Nova Scotians settle in for another winter season, Cape Breton North MLA Cecil Clarke wants local residents to know help is available when it comes to paying for home heating between now and April.
The Salvation Army's Good Neighbour Energy program is being offered once again this year, despite the challenges of provincial funding cuts that saw the NDP government eliminate support for the program entirely.
Clarke said under the previous Progressive Conservative government, hundreds of thousands of dollars were put toward the fund each year, adding that the program has returned, thanks to continued support from corporate and community sponsors.
He is encouraging residents to see if they qualify.
“ We have always considered this a very valuable program, as it is an opportunity to alleviate some of the stress on families struggling to cover the cost of their main home heating source.”
About 1,400 Nova Scotia families received assistance from the Good Neighbour fund in 2009; now in its 13th year, Clarke said he hopes to see the program continue.
