Bears improve mark with romp over Patriotes
NEW WATERFORD — Jeremy Piovesan potted 21 points to lead the host and defending champion Breton Education Centre Bears (21) to a 78-55 beating of the École Secondaire Roger-Comtois Patriotes of Loretteville, Que., (0-2) in New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic action at BEC gym, Wednesday.
Following Piovesan was 2009 Coal Bowl MVP Kyle MacDonald scoring 20 points and Colin Larade going to the net for 19 points.
Pacing the Patriotes’ offence was Arnaud Songa-Cote cashing in for 21 points.
Riverview 71, Notre Dame 55 The other local boys team at the tourney, the Riverview Royals (1-2), also posted a definitive win Wednesday, 71-55 over the Notre Dame High School Pride of Calgary (0-2).
Justin MacLellan led the Royals with 20 points, followed by Kelson Devereaux delivering 14 and Ryan Hooper going to the hoop for 13 points.
Leading the Pride were Josh Jebose scoring 14 points, Abe Aden adding 13 and David Lodovica chipping in 12 points.
QEH 89, St. Joseph’s 85
In earlier play, a closer match saw the Queen Elizabeth High School Royals of Surrey, B.C. (3-0) edge the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Crusaders of Brooks, Alta. (1-1) 89-85
Amar Nijjer and Arsh Khaira led the Royals with 27 points apiece.
Deng Awak paced the Crusaders with 25 points, followed by Stephen Younda potting 14.
Charlottetown 73, Gonzaga 67 Wednesday’s opening boys game, an all-Atlantic Canadian affair, saw the Charlottetown Rural High School Raiders (2-0) nip the Gonzaga High School Vikings of St. John’s, N.L. (2-1) 73-67.
Leading the Raiders were Jacob Simmons recording 23 points and Sean Seviour posting 18.
For the Vikings, Morgan MacDonald netted 16 points, Ryan Wood added 13 and Ryan Brockerville chipped in 12 points.
Riverview 73, Notre Dame 41 In earlier girls exhibition action, the Riverview Royals routed the Notre Dame High School Pride of Calgary 73-41.
Elyse MacLeod, Charley Savoy and Ainsley MacIntyre all scored 14 points for the Royals. Amanda McCullagh held the hot hand for the Pride with 10 points.
