NEW WATER­FORD — Jeremy Piovesan pot­ted 21 points to lead the host and de­fend­ing cham­pion Bre­ton Ed­u­ca­tion Cen­tre Bears (21) to a 78-55 beat­ing of the École Sec­ondaire Roger-Com­tois Pa­tri­otes of Loret­teville, Que., (0-2) in New Water­ford Coal Bowl Clas­sic action at BEC gym, Wed­nes­day.

Fol­low­ing Piovesan was 2009 Coal Bowl MVP Kyle MacDon­ald scor­ing 20 points and Colin La­rade go­ing to the net for 19 points.

Pac­ing the Pa­tri­otes’ of­fence was Ar­naud Songa-Cote cash­ing in for 21 points.

Riverview 71, Notre Dame 55 The other lo­cal boys team at the tour­ney, the Riverview Roy­als (1-2), also posted a de­fin­i­tive win Wed­nes­day, 71-55 over the Notre Dame High School Pride of Cal­gary (0-2).

Justin MacLel­lan led the Roy­als with 20 points, fol­lowed by Kel­son Dev­ereaux de­liv­er­ing 14 and Ryan Hooper go­ing to the hoop for 13 points.

Lead­ing the Pride were Josh Je­bose scor­ing 14 points, Abe Aden adding 13 and David Lodovica chip­ping in 12 points.

QEH 89, St. Joseph’s 85

In ear­lier play, a closer match saw the Queen El­iz­a­beth High School Roy­als of Sur­rey, B.C. (3-0) edge the St. Joseph’s Col­le­giate Cru­saders of Brooks, Alta. (1-1) 89-85

Amar Ni­j­jer and Arsh Khaira led the Roy­als with 27 points apiece.

Deng Awak paced the Cru­saders with 25 points, fol­lowed by Stephen Younda potting 14.

Char­lot­te­town 73, Gon­zaga 67 Wed­nes­day’s open­ing boys game, an all-At­lantic Cana­dian af­fair, saw the Char­lot­te­town Ru­ral High School Raiders (2-0) nip the Gon­zaga High School Vik­ings of St. John’s, N.L. (2-1) 73-67.

Lead­ing the Raiders were Ja­cob Sim­mons record­ing 23 points and Sean Se­viour post­ing 18.

For the Vik­ings, Mor­gan MacDon­ald net­ted 16 points, Ryan Wood added 13 and Ryan Brock­erville chipped in 12 points.

Riverview 73, Notre Dame 41 In ear­lier girls ex­hi­bi­tion action, the Riverview Roy­als routed the Notre Dame High School Pride of Cal­gary 73-41.

El­yse MacLeod, Charley Savoy and Ains­ley Mac­In­tyre all scored 14 points for the Roy­als. Amanda McCul­lagh held the hot hand for the Pride with 10 points.
