P.E.I. clinches play­off spot

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (CP) — Canada’s Jen­nifer Jones scored five in the fourth end en route to an 11-4 win over Nova Sco­tia’s Nancy McCon­nery as Draw 16 came to a close at the Scot­ties Tour­na­ment of Hearts Thurs­day af­ter­noon.

Canada’s fi­nal plac­ing in the stand­ings will be de­ter­mined fol­low­ing their game against On­tario’s Krista McCarville in the fi­nal round robin draw later Thurs­day. Both rinks are tied at 7-3. Kathy O’Rourke’s P.E.I. rink (83) of­fi­cially clinched a spot in Fri­day’s page play­off game de­spite a 10-5 loss to B.C.’s Kelly Scott (6-4).

In other Draw 16 re­sults, New Brunswick’s An­drea Kelly beat Man­i­toba’s Jill Thurston 9-6 and Al­berta’s Va­lerie Sweet­ing stole two in the eleventh end to beat North­west Ter­ri­to­ries/Yukon 9-7.

Thurston is tied for fourth with Scott at 6-4.

In the morn­ing draw, O’Rourke won 9-5 over New­found­land; McCarville de­feated Nova Sco­tia 7-3; Que­bec’s Eve Belisle (5-5) edged New Brunswick 6-5; and North­west Ter­ri­to­ries/Yukon won 9-5 over Saskatchewan.
