Cape Breton Post - - NORTHSIDE/VICTORIA -

NORTH SYDNEY — Sydney-Victoria MP Mark Eyking took part in a daylong roundtable meeting Friday in Guelph, Ont., that focused on bridging the rural-urban divide by strengthening economic opportunity and access to critical services in rural communities.

Eyking, chair of the Liberal rural caucus, opened the discussions at Ignatius College hosted by the Liberal caucus with the participation of Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. The roundtable featured representatives from the food, health, rural infrastructure and clean energy sectors.

“I believe in a strong Canada, a Canada in which economic opportunity and quality of life can be achieved in all regions, urban and rural,” said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. “ The road to prosperity in rural Canada starts here — by addressing the real priorities that rural Canadians have told us to pursue.”

Liberals addressed four priorities for rural Canada during the Guelph roundtable event: Working with provinces and municipalities to help get doctors in rural communities, creating a national food policy, achieving 100 per cent high-speed Internet connectivity and creating new green jobs in rural Canada.

“Rural infrastructure like Internet, roads and water services in every rural town needs to be modernized,” said Eyking. “ That’s why we’re setting a goal of achieving full high-speed Internet connectivity in every corner of the country and to improving the way infrastructure funds are delivered to rural municipalities along the lines of the federal gas tax transfer.”

Friday’s rural issues roundtable meeting is part of a series of roundtables and public forums hosted by the Liberal caucus while Parliament is prorogued. Other roundtables hosted by Liberal MPs this week in Ottawa included poverty and homelessness, community safety, the environment and international development.
