Pi­lot in Man­i­toba burns small plane to sig­nal for help

MANIG­O­TA­GAN, Man. (CP) — A pi­lot set his plane on fire to sig­nal for help af­ter it crashed on Satur­day, in­jur­ing both the pi­lot and his passenger.

Kenny Thomas, one of two broth­ers who helped with the res­cue, said he ar­rived on the scene to charred and scat­tered bits of the plane around 4:30 p.m.

“Parts of the plane were all over the place. He burned his plane to try and get help,” Thomas said.

Pi­lot Di­et­rich Hapel and passenger Clin­ton Moose­horn suf­fered non-life-threat­en­ing in­juries when the pri­vate, sin­gle-en­gine plane crashed shortly af­ter take­off.
