HAL­I­FAX — The Hal­i­fax Moose­heads nipped the Cape Bre­ton Scream­ing Ea­gles, 3-2, in front of 7,202 Que­bec Ma­jor Ju­nior Hockey League fans at the Hal­i­fax Metro Cen­tre, Satur­day night.

The Moose­heads’ To­mas Knotek opened scor­ing 3:22 into the match and Luke Adam replied for the Scream­ing Ea­gles at 15:01.

Hal­i­fax’s Ger­rad Grant then pot­ted one at 17:24 to put the home team up 2-1 head­ing into the sec­ond stanza, which was score­less.

Gabriel Des­jardins scored for the Moose­heads 5:49 into the third frame for the two-goal ad­van­tage. And Jan Piskacek found the back of the net for Cape Bre­ton with the fi­nal marker of the con­test at 11:27.

In goal, Peter Del­mas im­proved his record to 19-13 with the win, while Alexan­dre Veron­neau dropped his record to 1-1 with the loss. Hal­i­fax out­shot Cape Bre­ton 37-29.

Nei­ther team scored on the power play, of five chances for the Moose­heads and four op­por­tu­ni­ties for the Scream­ing Ea­gles.

Cape Bre­ton plays its next two games on the road against the Saint John Sea Dogs, Feb. 12 and 14 at Har­bour Sta­tion.
