HALIFAX — The Halifax Mooseheads nipped the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, 3-2, in front of 7,202 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League fans at the Halifax Metro Centre, Saturday night.
The Mooseheads’ Tomas Knotek opened scoring 3:22 into the match and Luke Adam replied for the Screaming Eagles at 15:01.
Halifax’s Gerrad Grant then potted one at 17:24 to put the home team up 2-1 heading into the second stanza, which was scoreless.
Gabriel Desjardins scored for the Mooseheads 5:49 into the third frame for the two-goal advantage. And Jan Piskacek found the back of the net for Cape Breton with the final marker of the contest at 11:27.
In goal, Peter Delmas improved his record to 19-13 with the win, while Alexandre Veronneau dropped his record to 1-1 with the loss. Halifax outshot Cape Breton 37-29.
Neither team scored on the power play, of five chances for the Mooseheads and four opportunities for the Screaming Eagles.
Cape Breton plays its next two games on the road against the Saint John Sea Dogs, Feb. 12 and 14 at Harbour Station.
