Glace Bay woman looking for votes as she tries to make a difference in the world

Cape Breton Post - - GLACE BAY/NEW WATERFORD - BY SHARON MONTGOMERY-DUPE

result of a combined vote from the public and the score from the judges. The winner, and a friend, will receive a volunteer experience in Kenya.

McNeil is asking the public to vote for her until the contest ends Feb. 28.

“If I am chosen I hope to work on a project in Kenya that involves sports with children. There are a lot of serious lessons kids can learn from sports — life lessons and discipline — but in the end it is the simple fact that kids, no matter where they are in the world, just want to have fun.

“I have volunteered a lot locally, but I have not had sufficient international volunteer experience. I feel that this is important to me in order to grow as a human rights student, as well as a citizen of the world.”

McNeil has volunteered locally with Students Helping Others Understand Tolerance, she has helped organize a shoe drive with her cross-country team for Shoes for Peru, she has been a coach, a peer tutor and worked with refugees.

If she wins the contest, she will be joined in Kenya by her friend Claire McNeil, a bachelor of education student at Cape Breton University.

Claire McNeil is involved with the Girl Guides of Canada, coaches at St. Michael’s Junior High School and was a volunteer at a school in Grenada through St. Francis Xavier University’s Extending Hope program.

“She would bring a lot to the table if she was able to come to Kenya with me.”

People can go online and read McNeil’s story and vote for her at www.redrosetea.ca/reachoutwithredrose/ essaycontest/ essaysearch.aspx#.
