Entrepreneur helping to build arts community in New Waterford area

Cape Breton Post - - LIFESTYLES - BY PETER CORBETT Peter Corbett is a journalism student at Holland College on a work term at the Cape Breton Post.

NEW WATERFORD — The arts community in Cape Breton is growing every day, says one local photographer.

Twenty-three year-old Corey Katz has been active in the local arts community for the last few years and plans on taking it a step further by launching his own photography company in the near future.

He first took an interest in photography after picking up his father’s camera and playing around with it when he was young, said Katz. He’s had a passion for it ever since. “I’ve always wanted to do it.” He is self trained and has been involved with photography for the last four years, said Katz.

His work has been featured in exhibits at venues all over Cape Breton, including the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design and Cape Breton University.

He helped co-found the Coastal Arts Initiative, a group who’s mission is to help highlight the works of young emerging artists in New Waterford and surrounding areas, which he said is very important to him.

He originally moved to Cape Breton from Toronto when he was younger. Because he comes from a mixed-race family, he said at first it was a little tough leaving one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. But, he said he enjoys living in Cape Breton and feels attitudes here are headed in the right direction.

He also has an appreciation for Cape Breton’s landscape.

Being a photographer on Cape Breton Island is a great experience, said Katz.

“ The scenery around here is absolutely magnificent.”

His plan for the immediate future is the launching of his company Corey Katz Photography which will specialize in portraits and weddings, said Katz. He said his long term goals are to make the business a success and to continue helping others in the arts community.

“Hopefully doing art projects with youth.”

He can tell the arts community in Cape Breton is growing by the increasing turnout at Coastal Arts Initiative exhibits, said Katz.

“At each exhibit we get more and more kids wanting to submit their stuff.”
