Royals team post wins to end hoops regular season
Riverview boys, Memorial girls to host regional tournaments next week
SYDNEY MINES — Josh Harris led the league-leading Riverview Royals with 17 points in their convincing 80-34 victory over the Memorial Eagles in Cape Breton High School Division 1 Boys Basketball League play Wednesday at Memorial gym.
Wednesday night’s hoops action was the last for the regular season. The Royals boys and Memorial Eagles girls will host their respective Highland Region championship tournaments next week.
Derek Lothier followed with 13 points, while both Kelson Devereaux and Jeff Green chipped in 11 points. The Royals had things well in control by halftime, as they held a commanding 45-13 advantage.
Nic Donato was the only Mavericks player to reach double digits with 12 points.
In girls action, Laura Andrea led the Royals attack with 24 points in their 73-63 victory over the Memorial Eagles. Riverview also got offence from Devon Pierre with 14 and Ainsley MacIntyre with 12.
The Eagles were paced by Kyla McRae with 16. Katelyn Hillier and Anna Dahl followed with 14 apiece.
At Breton Education Centre gym, Jeremy Piovesan rained down 46 points to pace the host BEC Bears to an 87-83 triumph over the Glace Bay Panthers.
Colin Larade followed with 18 points, while Kyle MacDonald chipped in 15. The Bears won the game despite trailing 41-40 at halftime.
Kyle Marshall netted 26 points in the loss. Nathan Bodhaine fired 18, Patrick Simms chipped in 16 and Cody MacPherson added 11.
In the girls tilt, the Panthers put in a balanced attack in their 81-37 victory over the Bears. Maryann Moore led Glace Bay with 13 points, while Lauren Peck and Jamie Toomey scored 11 apiece. Glace Bay was in control by recess, sporting a 42-10 advantage.
For BEC, Lacey Bursey fired 13 in the loss.
