Fundraiser tournament expands to include women’s teams
DOMINION — A fundraiser hockey tournament has just gotten a wee bit bigger.
The Original Six Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup will expand to include two women’s teams coming on board this year.
“ There are three women’s teams who have been using the ice in Dominion to practice. I approached two to see if they would be interested in playing in the tournament and they loved the idea,” said organizer Mickey McNeil.
The teams include Perry’s (Gym) Polar Paws representing the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Woman Icers representing the Montreal Canadiens.
The seventh annual tournament is being held March 18-20 at the Dominion Community Arena. All proceeds go to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at Immaculate Conception and at St. Eugene’s.
On opening day the women’s teams will play at 9 p.m. and they will play again the following day at 5 p.m.
Tournament festivities will also include a free social on March 19 and a dance with music by Kintyre on March 20.
At noon on Saturday the Glace Bay Minor Hockey tots will play three half-hour games and that will be followed by the Montreal Canadiens tots against the Cape Breton Regional Municipality mayor and council. The mayor and councillors will wear hockey gear but will not wear skates.
The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup final will begin at about 2:45 p.m.
