Fundraiser tour­na­ment ex­pands to in­clude women’s teams

DO­MIN­ION — A fundraiser hockey tour­na­ment has just got­ten a wee bit big­ger.

The Orig­i­nal Six Do­min­ion Hockey Chal­lenge Cup will ex­pand to in­clude two women’s teams com­ing on board this year.

“ There are three women’s teams who have been us­ing the ice in Do­min­ion to prac­tice. I ap­proached two to see if they would be in­ter­ested in play­ing in the tour­na­ment and they loved the idea,” said or­ga­nizer Mickey McNeil.

The teams in­clude Perry’s (Gym) Po­lar Paws rep­re­sent­ing the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Woman Icers rep­re­sent­ing the Montreal Cana­di­ens.

The sev­enth an­nual tour­na­ment is be­ing held March 18-20 at the Do­min­ion Com­mu­nity Arena. All pro­ceeds go to the So­ci­ety of St. Vin­cent de Paul at Im­mac­u­late Con­cep­tion and at St. Eu­gene’s.

On open­ing day the women’s teams will play at 9 p.m. and they will play again the fol­low­ing day at 5 p.m.

Tour­na­ment fes­tiv­i­ties will also in­clude a free so­cial on March 19 and a dance with mu­sic by Kin­tyre on March 20.

At noon on Satur­day the Glace Bay Mi­nor Hockey tots will play three half-hour games and that will be fol­lowed by the Montreal Cana­di­ens tots against the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Mu­nic­i­pal­ity mayor and coun­cil. The mayor and coun­cil­lors will wear hockey gear but will not wear skates.

The Do­min­ion Hockey Chal­lenge Cup fi­nal will be­gin at about 2:45 p.m.
