Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels says he and competitors are ‘friends for life’
1992 for Boys N the Hood.
Daniels is up against Canadians James Cameron for Avatar and Jason Reitman for Up in the Air, as well as Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds and Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker.
“ Jason’s texting me ... I love Kathryn (Bigelow), and I love Quentin (Tarantino) ... we’ve become very good friends,” said Daniels, 50, who lives in New York.
“ James Cameron is talking about putting us all together to help us in reading scripts as opposed to getting script notes from studio executives.
“ There’s a level of trust amongst the directors here.”
Daniels said when he’s been at a few panel discussions with Cameron lately, he’s found himself acting like a crazed fan.
“ When James Cameron’s in the room and we’re doing panels, I’ll stop and stare at him as he’s talking and they’ll go, ’Mr. Daniels,’ and I don’t answer very quickly because I’m still in thought with him and it’s very embarrassing.
“I didn’t go to film school and I’m learning so much from these people.”
The Oscars will be held March 7.
