PORT HAWKESBURY — Community leaders from Inverness and Richmond counties graduated from an Antigonish university’s pilot leadership program Saturday.

The project, led by the St. Francis Xavier extension department, is part of a provincewide initiative to help emerging and experienced leaders to develop personal leadership skills. Half of the 20 participants in the six-month pilot program were from Cape Breton.

“It was great, we were able to come together and bring out one each other strengths and it was really great to work on those strengths,” said Shannon MacDougall, executive director of the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce.

MacDougall, who runs the seasonal business Ceilidh Tent and Event Rentals, said the program

also helped participants improve on their weaknesses.

“All the communities from which these leaders hail, as well as the region as a whole, will benefit from the participant’s knowledge, experience, skills and networking gained during this program,” said extension department interim director Phil Davison in a press release.
