Using abortion wedge a disgusting tactic

Cape Breton Post - - COMMENT -

Four years ago the Liberal party foretold a Canada that would be stripped of its civil liberties, where minority rights would be trampled, where soldiers would police the streets with guns if the Conservatives won the 2006 election. It’s has been four years and none of the fear-mongering predictions have come to pass.

But Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition still takes every opportunity to play political games, looking for wedges it can drive between the government and the Canadian people. This time, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has decided to resurrect an old bogeyman at the expense of underprivileged women and children around the world.

Ignatieff dropped the festering carcass of abortion into the middle of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s announcement that he would put the health of women and children front and centre during this year’s G7 and G20 meetings in Canada. The Liberals have insisted that humanitarian aid should be conditional upon providing access to abortion services.

As a citizen of Canada, I am disgusted that he would make abortion an explicit condition of humanitarian aid. What does providing clean drinking water and medicine to Third World countries have to do with abortion? Nothing, unless you are a Liberal MP desperately looking for issues to divide the Canadian public in the hope that this will provide you a boost at the polls.

All Canadians, both pro-and anti-abortion, should be insulted at this attempt at blatant voter manipulation at the expense of the world’s most vulnerable. Todd Graham president, Sydney Victoria Conservative Riding Association
