Bas­ket­ball play­downs be­gin tonight

Four teams see­ing action

COX­HEATH — The Riverview Roy­als boys and the Memo­rial Ea­gles girls high school bas­ket­ball teams have earned the right to host their re­spec­tive High­land Re­gion cham­pi­onships, both start­ing tonight.

The Roy­als and the de­fend­ing cham­pion Ea­gles both fin­ished first in Cape Bre­ton High School Divi­sion 1 Bas­ket­ball League reg­u­lar sea­son action.

Both the boys and girls play­offs will em­ploy a Page for­mat.

The boys play­offs, at the Riverview High School gym in Cox­heath, start to­day at 6 p.m. with a match be­tween the Memo­rial Mav­er­icks and the Glace Bay Pan­thers. The loser of that game will be elim­i­nated.

Game 2 at 8 p.m. will see the host Roy­als take on the de­fend­ing cham­pion Syd­ney Academy Wild­cats, with the win­ner ad­vanc­ing to the fi­nal.

Thurs­day at 6 p.m., the win­ner of Game 1 and the loser of Game 2 will match up, with the vic­tor ad­vanc­ing to the cham­pi­onship match.

The boys fi­nal is slated for Fri­day at 7 p.m.

On the girls side, Game 1 will see Memo­rial meet the sec­ond­place Syd­ney Academy Wild­cats to­day at 6 p.m. at the host Memo­rial High School gym in Syd­ney Mines. The win­ner of Game 1 ad­vances to the fi­nal.

Game 2 at 8 p.m. has the third­place Riverview Roy­als tak­ing on the fourth-place Glace Bay Pan­thers, with the loser elim­i­nated.

Game 3, sched­uled for Thurs­day at 6 p.m., will see the loser of Game 1 take on the win­ner of Game 2, with the winning squad ad­vanc­ing to the fi­nal.

The girls cham­pi­onship will be con­tested Fri­day at 6 p.m.
