Basketball playdowns begin tonight
Four teams seeing action
COXHEATH — The Riverview Royals boys and the Memorial Eagles girls high school basketball teams have earned the right to host their respective Highland Region championships, both starting tonight.
The Royals and the defending champion Eagles both finished first in Cape Breton High School Division 1 Basketball League regular season action.
Both the boys and girls playoffs will employ a Page format.
The boys playoffs, at the Riverview High School gym in Coxheath, start today at 6 p.m. with a match between the Memorial Mavericks and the Glace Bay Panthers. The loser of that game will be eliminated.
Game 2 at 8 p.m. will see the host Royals take on the defending champion Sydney Academy Wildcats, with the winner advancing to the final.
Thursday at 6 p.m., the winner of Game 1 and the loser of Game 2 will match up, with the victor advancing to the championship match.
The boys final is slated for Friday at 7 p.m.
On the girls side, Game 1 will see Memorial meet the secondplace Sydney Academy Wildcats today at 6 p.m. at the host Memorial High School gym in Sydney Mines. The winner of Game 1 advances to the final.
Game 2 at 8 p.m. has the thirdplace Riverview Royals taking on the fourth-place Glace Bay Panthers, with the loser eliminated.
Game 3, scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m., will see the loser of Game 1 take on the winner of Game 2, with the winning squad advancing to the final.
The girls championship will be contested Friday at 6 p.m.
