Lo­cal speed­skaters medal at N.B. meet

SYD­NEY — Three mem­bers of the Cape Bre­ton Short Track Speed Skat­ing Club took home a medal from the Co­diac Cy­clones All Points Meet in Dieppe, N.B., over the week­end.

Tara Gowan fin­ished first in all four Divi­sion 6 fe­males fi­nals to win gold, not to men­tion mak­ing the qual­i­fy­ing time for the 2011 Canada Win­ter Games by skat­ing the 500me­tre dis­tance in 52.89 sec­onds.

Her other races were also per­sonal bests, in­clud­ing 1:11.522 in the 666-me­tre dis­tance, 1:24.648 in the 777-me­tre event and 1:51.552 in the 1000-me­tre race.

Olivia Gowan also skated to a gold medal, in Divi­sion 2 fe­males, with a sea­son-best time in the 777me­tre event of 1:19.653. Her other times in­cluded 51.087 in the 500me­tre race, 48.442 in the 1000-me­tre race and 2:41.192 in the 1,500-me­tre dis­tance. Olivia qual­i­fied for the 2011 Canada Win­ter Games ear­lier this sea­son.

Fel­low club mem­ber Grace Wad­den won a sil­ver medal in Divi­sion 11 fe­males, achiev­ing per­sonal best times in all four dis­tances: 49.562 in the 333-me­tre event, 1:14.837 in the 500-me­tre dis­tance, 33.16 in the 222-me­tre race and 1:42.666 in the 666-me­tre dis­tance.
