Local speedskaters medal at N.B. meet
SYDNEY — Three members of the Cape Breton Short Track Speed Skating Club took home a medal from the Codiac Cyclones All Points Meet in Dieppe, N.B., over the weekend.
Tara Gowan finished first in all four Division 6 females finals to win gold, not to mention making the qualifying time for the 2011 Canada Winter Games by skating the 500metre distance in 52.89 seconds.
Her other races were also personal bests, including 1:11.522 in the 666-metre distance, 1:24.648 in the 777-metre event and 1:51.552 in the 1000-metre race.
Olivia Gowan also skated to a gold medal, in Division 2 females, with a season-best time in the 777metre event of 1:19.653. Her other times included 51.087 in the 500metre race, 48.442 in the 1000-metre race and 2:41.192 in the 1,500-metre distance. Olivia qualified for the 2011 Canada Winter Games earlier this season.
Fellow club member Grace Wadden won a silver medal in Division 11 females, achieving personal best times in all four distances: 49.562 in the 333-metre event, 1:14.837 in the 500-metre distance, 33.16 in the 222-metre race and 1:42.666 in the 666-metre distance.
