Eagles, Royals post girl’s playoff wins
SYDNEY MINES — The Memorial Eagles and Riverview Royals posted victories in the opening day of play at the Cape Breton High School Division 1 Girls Basketball League regional playoffs at Memorial gym, Tuesday.
The Eagles bested the Sydney Academy Wildcats 84-70 in a battle of the first and second-place teams. Memorial now moves on to the final, while Sydney Academy will face the third-place Royals, who downed the fourth-place Glace Bay Panthers by a 71-32 score.
In Memorial’s win, Anna Dahl led the way with 20 points, Danielle MacDonald scored 13, Katelyn Hillier netted 11 and Kyla MacRae and Brittany Leblanc fired 10. Memorial held a 41-30 lead at halftime.
Kayla McCarron netted a gamehigh 33 points in the loss, while Jenna Coleman chipped in 17.
In Riverview’s triumph, Maria Rizzetto led the way with 20 points. Devon Pierre scored 13 and Allie MacIntyre added 10. Emily Budden and Ashley Boutilier replied for the Panthers, with nine and eight points respectively.
Riverview led the game 31-20 at the half.
Play continues Thursday with Riverview against Sydney Academy at 6 p.m. The winner will face the Eagles in the championship Friday at 6 p.m.
