Ea­gles, Roy­als post girl’s play­off wins

SYD­NEY MINES — The Memo­rial Ea­gles and Riverview Roy­als posted vic­to­ries in the open­ing day of play at the Cape Bre­ton High School Divi­sion 1 Girls Bas­ket­ball League re­gional play­offs at Memo­rial gym, Tues­day.

The Ea­gles bested the Syd­ney Academy Wild­cats 84-70 in a bat­tle of the first and sec­ond-place teams. Memo­rial now moves on to the fi­nal, while Syd­ney Academy will face the third-place Roy­als, who downed the fourth-place Glace Bay Pan­thers by a 71-32 score.

In Memo­rial’s win, Anna Dahl led the way with 20 points, Danielle MacDon­ald scored 13, Kate­lyn Hil­lier net­ted 11 and Kyla MacRae and Brit­tany Leblanc fired 10. Memo­rial held a 41-30 lead at half­time.

Kayla McCar­ron net­ted a game­high 33 points in the loss, while Jenna Cole­man chipped in 17.

In Riverview’s tri­umph, Maria Rizzetto led the way with 20 points. Devon Pierre scored 13 and Al­lie Mac­In­tyre added 10. Emily Bud­den and Ashley Boutilier replied for the Pan­thers, with nine and eight points re­spec­tively.

Riverview led the game 31-20 at the half.

Play con­tin­ues Thurs­day with Riverview against Syd­ney Academy at 6 p.m. The win­ner will face the Ea­gles in the cham­pi­onship Fri­day at 6 p.m.
