Weeks oust Tradesmen in overtime
NEW GLASGOW — Brent Turnbull single handedly put an end to the Cape Breton Tradesmen’s season Tuesday night.
Turnbull’s goal at 9:07 of overtime lifted the Weeks Major Midget to a 6-5 win over the Tradesmen to capture their Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League quarter-final series. The Weeks won the best-of-five affair, 3-2.
Four players — Turnbull, Garret Holmes, Robert Davis and Corey Bennett — scored and added two assists in the triumph. Cal Gloade and Ryan Vokey rounded out the scoring.
Kyle Farrell led the Tradesmen with a goal and two helpers. Devon Muir and Brock Morrison scored and added an assist, while Jordan Langlois and Brad Fitzgerald also found the back of the net.
Cape Breton held a 3-0 advantage in the second period when the Weeks score five unanswered goals. The Tradesmen rebounded with two goals in the second half of the third to force overtime, setting the table for Turnbull’s heroics.
In goal, Jesse Cox made 32 saves in the win, while Michael Bourgeois deflected 33 shots in the loss.
The best-of-five league semifinal series begin this weekend. The first-place Halifax Taylar Made Security Titans face the fourthplace Weeks, while the secondplace Cole Harbour Major Midgets move on to play the third place Dartmouth Subways.
