Weeks oust Trades­men in over­time

NEW GLASGOW — Brent Turn­bull sin­gle hand­edly put an end to the Cape Bre­ton Trades­men’s sea­son Tues­day night.

Turn­bull’s goal at 9:07 of over­time lifted the Weeks Ma­jor Midget to a 6-5 win over the Trades­men to cap­ture their Nova Sco­tia Ma­jor Midget Hockey League quar­ter-fi­nal se­ries. The Weeks won the best-of-five af­fair, 3-2.

Four play­ers — Turn­bull, Gar­ret Holmes, Robert Davis and Corey Ben­nett — scored and added two as­sists in the tri­umph. Cal Gloade and Ryan Vokey rounded out the scor­ing.

Kyle Far­rell led the Trades­men with a goal and two helpers. Devon Muir and Brock Mor­ri­son scored and added an as­sist, while Jor­dan Lan­glois and Brad Fitzger­ald also found the back of the net.

Cape Bre­ton held a 3-0 ad­van­tage in the sec­ond pe­riod when the Weeks score five unan­swered goals. The Trades­men re­bounded with two goals in the sec­ond half of the third to force over­time, set­ting the ta­ble for Turn­bull’s hero­ics.

In goal, Jesse Cox made 32 saves in the win, while Michael Bour­geois de­flected 33 shots in the loss.

The best-of-five league semi­fi­nal se­ries be­gin this week­end. The first-place Hal­i­fax Tay­lar Made Se­cu­rity Ti­tans face the fourth­place Weeks, while the sec­ond­place Cole Har­bour Ma­jor Midgets move on to play the third place Dart­mouth Sub­ways.
