Cape Bre­ton na­tive, RCMP Cpl. Mike Lid­stone, has been hon­oured for his com­mu­nity work to im­prove the lives of youth at risk. Lid­stone, of West Bay, is the 2009 At­lantic re­gion re­cip­i­ent of the Golden Spur Award which is pre­sented by the RCMP Foun­da­tion. The award is is­sued an­nu­ally to of­fi­cers who spur the youth in their com­mu­ni­ties to reach their full po­ten­tial and who go above and be­yond the call of duty. Lid­stone was hon­oured for his work on the At­lantic High School Wrestling Fes­ti­val pro­gram. In ad­di­tion to be­ing tour­na­ment or­ga­nizer, Lid­stone has been coach­ing young peo­ple for 24 years. Lid­stone spent a num­ber of years at the Wind­sor RCMP de­tach­ment and was re­cently posted to the Lower Sackville De­tach­ment.
