More politicians needed from the working class

Cape Breton Post - - COMMENT - Paul White Scotchtown

I have received a lot of calls about my previous letter, Expense Shenanigans Especially Disappointing to Supporters of NDP, Feb. 6. Most comments have been similar: “ What can you do about it?” “It’ll be swept under the rug by next month.” or “I give up – I’ll never vote again. They’re all crooks!”

That’s definitely the wrong way to go. These people have to be held accountable for your tax dollars, especially when we do without while they lavish themselves with gifts. Most of these MLAs, as in the Billy Joe MacLean fiasco, will probably get re-elected.

Why people think only a doctor or a lawyer can do the job is beyond me! The most caring and honest people I have ever met are working class, going day to day with little or nothing – not only not complaining but sharing what they have with others.

All those unaccountable funds would have been great for helping families in distress who have no heating oil or have had their power cut off by our friendly Nova Scotia Power while sickness knocks the family down.

With the Children’s Aid Society of Cape Breton-Victoria being swallowed up by the provincial Department of Community Services, out the door goes compassion and in comes the old Graba-Number. Rest assured, the office will close at 5 p.m. like the rest of government.

How great to be a politician who could show an honest list of expenses, however high, that were used to help others in the con- stituency instead of himself. It’s always the same people heading up the fundraising for families and collecting for those who are hurting. These are the people that should be elected.

Tell Premier Darrell Dexter and MP Mark Eyking who you want to see running in your area. Then maybe you will have a government we can truly say is by the people and for the people.

Daydreaming? Maybe. Giving up? Never! You lose only when you give up and don’t care anymore who is elected to handle your tax dollars.
