Wildcats girls, Royals boys take regionals
MEMORIAL — Kayla McCarron rained down a game-high 41 points to lead the Sydney Academy Wildcats to an 88-80 win over the Memorial Eagles in the Cape Breton High School Division 1 Girls Basketball League regional final Friday at Memorial gym.
The Wildcats stormed back from a 42-35 deficit at halftime for the regional title. They’re hosting the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation championship, March 4-6. Memorial will now play in a qualifying tournament against an opponent to be determined.
Jenna Coleman followed with 19 points in the Wildcats triumph. Marissa MacKinnon added nine, while Kristen Williamson added eight.
Memorial was paced by Anna Dahl with 23 points, Katelyn Hillier with 18 and Danielle MacDonald with 14.
At Riverview gym, the Royals got past the Wildcats by a 66-58 to take Division 1 boys banner. They’ll travel to the Capital district for provincials, March 4-6, while the Wildcats will host a provincial qualifier next weekend.
Riverview held at 28-24 lead at recess.
Jeff Green led Riverview with 18 points, Kelson Devereaux and Derek Lothier followed with 14 and Ryan Hooper added 13.
Chris Farrow and Justin Crane replied with 14 points apiece for Sydney Academy, while Devin Axworthy added 12.
