NORTH SYDNEY — There will be fencing going up at the North Sydney terminal Monday.

In order to comply with Transport Canada regulations, Marine Atlantic has until April 1 to have a security plan in place that includes possible closure of the gateway off Commercial Street in North Sydney.

Eventually, all Marine Atlantic properties will be fenced, with any point of access through a controlled gate. In the meantime, commissionaires will continue to escort people across the property.

Ekistics Planning and Design of Dartmouth, a multi-disciplinary consulting firm specializing in land development planning, design and project management hired to help find a solution to the walkway issue at Marine Atlantic's North Sydney terminal, will meet with stakeholders Monday at 1 p.m.

The business community is concerned that closing off pedestrian access will adversely affect the downtown businesses and potential tourist traffic.
